DOCLEA

Doclea is an ancient ornament to Podgorica and Montenegro. It dates from the 1st century A.D. There can be found remains of public buildings dating from Roman times: triumphal arches, temples – one dedicated to the Goddess Roma, a second to the Goddess Diana, public baths – thermal springs and an impressive residential palace. Ancient Doclea became a part of world archaeology when the so-called Podgorica Glass was found in a tomb construction with some other precious objects – vessels made of glass and ceramics, jewellery, instruments, weapons and money. The first archaeological excavations started at the end of the 19th century. The Italian archaeologist P. Sticotti published a book about Doclea entitled Roman Town Doclea in Montenegro in Vienna in 1913. As the biggest archaeological site in our country, we hope it will become an archaeological park very soon, and the most important tourist attraction in the city and this region, with tourist, cultural, educational and scientific significance.

MEDUN

Medun (Meteon), with its old Town and Fortress, is situated 13 km north-east of Podgorica. It dates back to ancient times. Originally it was built as a fortress, but later, between the 6th and 3rd century BC, became a town. Besides the fact that this place is very interesting because of its long and rich history, it is very important for analysing of different historical periods, starting from prehistory to the Middle Ages. The birthplace of Marko Miljanov, our great philosopher, writer, Duke and first Mayor of Podgorica, today a museum, is situated below the fortress. Medun is one of the main tourist attractions in the region of Podgorica.
